Hanna Kantokorpi

Artist

My starting point is a mythological person alone in the strange massive landscape as a vision of that personīs soul.

I describe the inner world of the Saint or the Hero through an allegoric landscape, through the strange wilderness or desert of his or her deep loneliness. The figures of my paintings are mental symbols of holiness. My work is based on literary sources: the Kalevala and legends of the Catholic saints. One theme of my painting is pacifism; I paint to show that it is wrong to crucify people for their conviction. I respect my characters by not showing their pain: they are calm and peaceful while introspecting and meditating in their inner mysterious mind. As a storyteller I'm an expressionist, but as a painter I'm an impressionist. The truth about the meaning of life stands behind the myths and legends.
